CoolSculpting

Is CoolSculpting Safe?

While CoolSculpting has now been around for several years, not everybody is familiar with the treatment, how it works, what exactly it does and whether or not it is truly safe. We here at Front Range Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery have provided CoolSculpting treatment to the people of Loveland and Northern Colorado for more than six years as the first certified practice in the region, so it’s important to us that we help anybody out there with questions better understand what CoolSculpting is all about.

Today, we’d like to tackle one of the bigger questions that often asked about CoolSculpting and our practice, which is whether or not CoolSculpting is safe. While the short answer is yes, absolutely, we’ll take a closer look and why it’s actually incredibly safe, and in fact, results in very little pain or discomfort in most patients.

CoolSculpting FDA History

CoolSculpting was first cleared by the Food and Drug Administration back in 2010 and is considered the top choice for non-invasive fat reduction, which makes it a fantastic liposuction alternative as CoolSculpting is a non-surgical treatment. CoolSculpting is cleared by the FDA for nine different treatment areas after expanding over the years since 2010, now including the abdomen, thighs, underneath the chin, bra and back areas, upper arms, underneath the buttocks and for the submandibular area (just below the jawline).

What Does Non-Invasive Mean?

Unlike surgical procedures, such as liposuction, for example, CoolSculpting is non-invasive. If you’re not sure exactly what “non-invasive” means, it simply indicates that there are no needles or surgery involved. As a result, there is very little downtime or recovery, making it an extremely popular liposuction alternative with a host of other tremendous benefits.

As a quick recap, let’s review in short how CoolSculpting works:

  • Fat is cooled to just above freezing
  • Crystals form within the fat cells and then the fat cells die
  • When the fat cells die, they collapse and a natural inflammatory process removes the dead fat cells from the body through the lymphatic system
  • Over a period of time after the treatment, fat cells are eliminated from the body, resulting in fat layer reduction
  • CoolSculpting is quick, removes the fat cells for good and comes with little pain for most patients
