CoolSculpting FAQs

What is CoolSculpting®?

CoolSculpting is a form of non-surgical liposuction that noticeably eliminates fat using a unique cooling technology. During your 1-on-1 consultation, Dr. Schutte we will help you determine if CoolSculpting is the right option for you and if you’re an ideal candidate.

Am I a good candidate?

CoolSculpting is not the same as liposuction, nor is it a substitute. It’s also not an ideal treatment for people who are obese and need to lose lots of weight. A good candidate for CoolSculpting will have trouble areas they’d like to get rid of but are otherwise healthy. During your free cosmetic consultation, Dr. Schutte will talk with you about your goals and needs, and help you determine if you’re a good candidate for CoolSculpting.

How long is each CoolSculpting treatment?

A typical CoolSculpting treatment lasts between one and three hours, however, every patient is different. Your doctor will discuss how long your treatments will be based on your goals and needs during your free consultation.

Is CoolSculpting safe? Is it painful? Are there side effects?

CoolSculpting has been cleared by the FDA for safely and effectively reducing fat in the abdomen and flanks (love handles). Though some patients report slight discomfort or temporary pain, there is typically no downtime required after treatments. The side effects of CoolSculpting include bruising, redness, tenderness to the touch, swelling, itching, tingling, cramping and numbness. Most side effects are short-lived, but numbness can last for several weeks after the procedure. If you have concerns about the discomfort of side effects relating to CoolSculpting, be sure to discuss them with your doctor during your consultation.

How expensive is CoolSculpting? How many treatments will I need to reach my goal?

The cost of CoolSculpting depends on a number of different factors, including the areas of your body that you’re concerned about, your goals and the number of treatments necessary to reach your goals. In order to get a realistic idea of the cost of your treatment, and the number of treatments you’ll need, your doctor will need to assess you in person.

What happens during a CoolSculpting treatment?

You will tell the clinician which areas need to be treated and then they will position the CoolSculpting device on the appropriate area of your body. The bulge of fat being treated will be drawn between two cooling panels. You may feel a firm pulling sensation, as well as some pressure — at least enough for the tissue to be cooled appropriately. After an hour or so, depending on your specific needs, your treatment will be complete.

What does CoolSculpting feel like?

During the first few minutes of treatment, you’ll probably feel some pressure accompanied by intense cold. Once this dissipates, though, you’ll be able to work on a laptop, read or even take a nap during your treatment.

How much downtime can I expect after my treatment?

CoolSculpting is a complete nonsurgical procedure, and most people are able to return to their normal activities right after the treatment is complete. Some patients experience minor bruising, tingling, redness or numbness in the treated area, but these side effects generally resolve themselves quickly.

When will I start seeing results?

You may start to see the initial results of CoolSculpting within three weeks of your first treatment. You’ll start to see the most dramatic results after a couple of months, however, your body will continue flushing out fat cells for four to six months after your treatment.

Do I need to follow a specific diet and exercise program, or take any supplements?

There is very little that you’ll need to do to prepare for your CoolSculpting treatment. No particular diet or exercise routine is required, and you won’t need to take any special supplements.

Do the results last?

With CoolSculpting, the fat cells that are eliminated are eliminated for good and will not come back. Of course, new fat cells can be formed, but as long as you maintain your weight by following a healthy diet and exercise plan, your results should be permanent.
